Amazon has pulled WikiLeaks off its cloud hosting infrastructure, bowing to political pressure from Sen. Joe Lieberman and the Department of Homeland Security.

The Guardian quotes Lieberman's statement: "[Amazon's] decision to cut off WikiLeaks now is the right decision and should set the standard for other companies WikiLeaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material. I call on any other company or organisation that is hosting WikiLeaks to immediately terminate its relationship with them."

The department of homeland security confirmed Amazon's move, referring journalists to Lieberman's statement, notes The Guardian.

"I will be asking Amazon about the extent of its relationship with Wikileaks and what it and other web service providers will do in the future to ensure that their services are not used to distribute stolen, classified information," Lieberman said, according to Reuters.

Ryan Calo, a lecturer at Stanford University's Center for Internet and Society told Reuters that "It would set a dangerous precedent were companies like Amazon to take down things merely because the senator or another government entity started to ask question about them."

The New Yorker's Amy Davidson writes: "Lieberman may be exaggerating his own role, and Amazon can make choices about what business to be in. Still, is Amazon reporting to a senator now? Is the company going to tell him about "the extent of its relationship" with WikiLeaks—with any customer? He's free to ask, of course, but in terms of an obligation to answer: Does somebody have a warrant or a subpoena for that? One wonders if Lieberman feels that he, or any Senator, can call in the company running The New Yorker's printing presses when we are preparing a story that includes leaked classified material, and tell them to stop it. The circumstances are different, but not so different as to be really reassuring."

"This certainly implicates First Amendment rights to the extent that web hosts may, based on direct or informal pressure, limit the materials the American public has a First Amendment right to access," EFF senior staff attorney Kevin Bankston told Talking Points Memo.

It does not appear that Amazon was served with a legal order to take WikiLeaks down, but rather that the decision was based on verbal criticism from Lieberman and other establishment members. The fact that a website can be taken down without any due process in a country which once had a vaunted tradition of free speech should be an alarm call to anyone who understands the importance of a free media.

El fundador de Wikileaks concedió este miércoles una entrevista vía Skype a la revista estadounidense TIME, en la que anunció que los protagonistas de la próxima filtración serán algunos bancos.

Nuestro país no se libra del escándalo. Según escribe en kaosenlared.net, Eduardo Rodriguez-Baz, España consintió los vuelos secretos de la CIA por su territorio con presuntos terroristas capturados ilegalmente, informó ayer el diario El País en base a documentos revelados por Wikileaks.

La Embajada de Washington en Madrid comunicó al Departamento norteamericano de Estado que el Gobierno español "no ponía reparos" a los vuelos secretos de la Agencia Central de Inteligencia (CIA), de acuerdo con el periódico madrileño. En su edición de este jueves, el matutino desvela un cable confidencial transmitido en 2006 tras un encuentro mantenido por el entonces embajador estadounidense aquí, Eduardo Aguirre, con la ex vicepresidenta primera María Teresa Fernández de la Vega.

"De la Vega subrayó que España no tiene reparos a los vuelos de inteligencia a través de territorio español. Ellos simplemente quieren ser informados y si fuera necesario, poder demostrar que ejercían una vigilancia apropiada", relata Aguirre en su informe.

En otro cable, el diplomático estadounidense advirtió que (Washington) no podía confiar en que el conservador Partido Popular (PP), principal de la oposición, no hiciera ruido sobre el asunto de los vuelos.

"Pese a su orientación proamericana (en alusión al PP)", nuestra experiencia sugiere que no dudará en "capitalizar" cualquier oportunidad para desgastar al presidente del Ejecutivo socialista, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, opinó.

El escándalo de los vuelos de la CIA, el tránsito clandestino por aeropuertos europeos de sospechosos de terrorismo capturados ilegalmente y torturados en centros de detención secretos, tomó por sorpresa en 2005 a la administración de Rodríguez Zapatero y a la legación norteamericana en Madrid, relata El País.

Pero ambos coincidieron en un objetivo común: minimizar su impacto en la opinión pública y evitar que la investigación judicial abierta en España complicase las ya delicadas relaciones entre el jefe del Gobierno ibérico y el entonces presidente George W. Bush, según el cotidiano.

Por este motivo, se llevaron a cabo diferentes reuniones entre las partes, sostiene la versión.

La diplomacia estadounidense utilizó a fiscales y altos cargos españoles para interferir en las pesquisas por el caso Couso, los vuelos de la CIA o las torturas en Guantánamo, afirmó este martes El País, en base a los informes secretos filtrados por Wikileaks.

La primera se refiere a la muerte en Iraq del camarógrafo español José Couso, ultimado en abril de 2003 por soldados norteamericanos que dispararon desde un tanque contra el hotel Palestina de Bagdad, una de las sedes de la prensa internacional en la nación invadida.

Otra de las causas alude a la investigación abierta por el juez Baltasar Garzón, tras una demanda por torturas en la prisión ilegal de Guantánamo contra Hamed Abderramán Ahmed, preso de nacionalidad española.

La tercera apunta a las escalas realizadas en esta nación europea por los vuelos secretos de la CIA, en los que se trasladaban prisioneros a la citada cárcel.

Por este caso, la fiscalía española reclamó en mayo la detención de 13 responsables de la Agencia Central de Inteligencia.

Por su parte, la ministra de Defensa, Carme Chacón, se ha referido a las nuevas revelaciones de documentos de 'Wikileaks' que hablan de que España no puso reparos a los vuelos de la CIA en territorio español asegurando que, en este asunto, "se cumplió la legalidad."
